GCC’s Vision represents a long-term view of society - - a society in which significant improvements can be achieved for the betterment of both its people and the organizations and institutions that serve them.

Very much a part of GCC’s Vision is that both this Website and GCC’s Mission and Services (explained in detail throughout this website) can play an important role for Leaders of Today's Organizations and Institutions.

It is true that throughout the history of peoples and nations, our society and its institutions have often been the sources of order and even greatness.

But these same institutions and organizations have also NOT always lived up to what they were designed, instituted, and organized to do. For example:

    • There are those institutions and organizations that at times become the vehicles for supporting the livelihood of greedy, incompetent, and corrupt executives, as well as the misbehavior and corruption of lower-level staff who, for purposes relating to their own personal gain rather than for the good of the organization or institution and its stakeholders, learn how to take every inappropriate advantage of the jobs they hold.

      Such conduct and behavior, even when it may not rise to the level of criminal activity, is nevertheless not without its high cost to others within, or served by, the organization or institution, such as (a) other executives managers, and employees who do a good job and rely on their jobs to support their families and/or status of living; (b) customers and citizens who expect good service for the prices and/or taxes they pay; and (c) investors who are seeking a fair return on their investment.

    • Then there are many institutions and organizations whose human resources at all levels simply lose sight of the important things related to what the organization or institution is in business to deliver.

      Even though corruption may not be a major issue in these organizations and institutions, it is their systems, procedures, processes, work habits, and practices that become “corrupt” and burdensome, and over time, substantially degraded.

      For private sector organizations, this eventually affects the financial bottom-line due to the higher costs of operating and, at times, even the loss of customers.

      For government institutions more tax dollars are spent irresponsibly by both politicians and government bureaucrats at the expense of citizens who eventually are taxed even more, while the level of services to them actually declines.

Eventually these institutions and organizations often become the very sources of - - or at minimum contribute to - - today’s social and economic problems.

In the private sector, examples include the collapse of Enron, WorldCom and other firms, and more recently, the disclosure of irresponsible management practices in the financial institutions and automobile industry.

In the public sector, examples include the revelations in recent years of irresponsible practices in two quasi-government institutions; i.e., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Also, the often poor decisions that are taken by the Executive and Legislative Branches of government - - decisions that are based on “partisan politics” rather than on what is best for the people and the nation.

With such a checkered past, a few questions come to mind:

  • How can organizations and institutions be counted on to make things better for society?

  • How can government institutions be brought around to effectively doing the very best for the people and the nation, as GCC’s Vision suggests?

  • How can other types of organizations such as business and non-government not-for-profit entities be brought around to effectively operate for the benefit of all stakeholders and for the broader social and economic advancements of society in general?

  • Is there then hope? Can things be changed?

GCC believes that there is hope! And CHANGE is possible!

But it will take Fundamental Change - - Real Fundamental Change that is directed towards addressing the very root of the problem which comes down to this:

  • There is an absence in today’s culture of that inner drive in individuals that inspires them to do what is right and principled rather than doing what is expedient, political, and self-serving.
    .
  • It is that very same inner drive that represents CHARACTER in an individual - - CHARACTER that is based on a set of honorable values that do not change, neither with the passage of time, the pressures of the popular culture of the day, nor the situation at hand.

  • It is that rare time-honored CHARACTER in an individual represented by a host of recognizable traits and values that demonstrate a person’s true self - - traits such as honesty, integrity, dependability, commitment, responsibility, etc. The same CHARACTER traits:

    • that define an individual as one committed to both principled individual behavior and ethical professional conduct


    • that initially should be developed in children by their parents

    • that require daily strengthening and reinforcement within the formal educational systems that include, not only the content of the curricula, but also the positive, reinforcing attitudes of teachers and instructors, together with a supporting overall environment that schools should provide

    • that should be found in those involved in the daily work and activities of communities, businesses, government, and eventually of all of the institutions and organizations that support and also depend on society

    • that should also be found in today's leaders, executives, and managers (in addition, of course, to other more specific leadership qualities, the most essential of which would be the ability to successfully engage and motivate the right people - - i.e., others - - to effectively achieve specific goals)

    • that, in addition to other more specific spousal qualities, still reflect the key traits that are necessary to keep families and marriages intact

    • that need to be adopted, embraced, and practiced by individuals as a life-long commitment.

This is not a pie-in-the-sky illusion that GCC is referring to above but rather a serious and vital course of action that is required and that should have been adopted from the very beginning as societies and their supporting institutions and other organizations were first developing.

If we are ever to be successful in developing and reinforcing that necessary, but often absent, sense of CHARACTER in people - - a CHARACTER based on a set of HONORABLE VALUES that are essential; and, if we as individuals, as husbands and wives, as parents, as leaders, as executives, as managers, as employees, as professionals, etc., and as members of society at large are ever able to realize our full potential to give our very best in whatever walk of life we ultimately pursue, then, it is better late than never! The time to start is NOW!

And to executives and other leaders and managers, more specifically, for whom this website and GCC’s services and mission were designed, GCC’s long-term Vision elaborated here, not only gets to the very core or root of the problem, but also, provides for those executives, other leaders, and managers the very best opportunity to finally restore and/or strengthen those time-honored values in the people who work within the very organizations and institutions that they lead and manage.

What does this really mean for today’s executives, other leaders, and managers? But perhaps even more important - - what interest or stake should executives, leaders, and managers have for building or restoring CHARACTER in individuals who work in their organizations or institutions?

Very simply stated, it comes down to this:

People with CHARACTER based on honorable values have been around during every period in history. Even given today’s dismal state of affairs found in government, business, the family, marriages, schools and the culture in general, there are still people around with CHARACTER that is based on Time-Honored Values who make positive contributions as members of Society.

The mass media also has a responsibility to serve society in honorable ways since it can exert a powerful influence on the lives of those who rely on it. Many rely on the mass media to form their attitudes and opinions on what type of behaviors are acceptable.

Too many people, especially those who grew up in more recent decades have been exposed to less - - if any at all - - Character Training that is required to counteract the negative influence that various types of mass media exert.

Add to that the fact that more and more children are left unsupervised and exposed to inappropriate television programming and internet websites that CAN have a devastating long-term effect. Parents and Guardians simply need to carry out their primary responsibilities for ensuring that a child's early experiences, whether it be from Television, Motion Pictures, Computers, Books, Games, etc., are appropriate for their age. It would be better to err on the side of CAUTION.

 

How Society Plummeted
To The Deplorable State of Affairs In Which It Finds Itself Today
!

Today’s popular culture in general is represented by the rampant, irresponsible conduct and behavior that resulted as the standards of "absolute moral values" were replaced by a "New Standard of Right and Wrong Determined By The INDIVIDUAL!"

Predictably, that ABSURDITY soon gave way to the relaxation of the values and good qualities in people (e.g., morality, honesty, integrity, diligence, dedication, hard work, etc.,) and, began to impact all areas of life such as reducing the quality standards and expectations in education, in the workplace, in government, in law and order, in national defense, etc.

In addition, the very foundations of society itself, Marriage and the Family Unit, have been under siege and undermined by advocates of this absurd notion, as have the moral values once taught and fostered in children by their parents!

This absurdity also has had a detrimental effect on today's institutions and organizations of all types whose Employees, Staff, and even Leaders are products of a Society in which personal character and ethical and moral principles, in more recent decades, have been trivialized if not completely abandoned!

Can Anything Be Done To Reverse Course?

To begin with, parents should be introducing and nurturing positive values in their children. They also should fully understand and internalize that the institution of marriage - - that unites them as husband and wife - - is underpinned by what should be the most important and solemn promise to each other to remain faithful for the good of their children, for their own wellbeing, and for society at large.

When husbands and wives demonstrate, in positive ways, the love and respect they have for each other and how they deal with the problems that come their way, children can become better equipped to follow their examples.

Stable families are the very foundation of a society that will flourish. The marriage bond should be viewed as:

A permanent commitment of a husband and wife to each other who share in the extraordinary and awesome responsibilities that such a commitment entails both for themselves, their family, and society at large.

People “who don’t get that”, “who don’t care to practice that”, “who believe that it applies to others, not themselves” can hardly expect a society to change for the better.

Bad behavior, especially by those who should be respected and admired, influences “bad behavior” in others just as individuals who are in possession of honorable character traits and who practice those traits in all aspects of life, including the workplace, can influence others to conduct their lives in the same honorable way!

So, in marriage, if husband and wife, as individual members of society do little if anything - - especially by their own example of commitment to their marriage vows that is so fundamental to a stable society - - then little if anything will serve to begin changing the irresponsibility in people that, today, permeates all aspects of society, even worldwide.

Moreover, to highlight the relevancy and importance of what GCC is discussing here . . . the honorable CHARACTER in individuals can, in fact, very much impact the behavior of society in general in very positive ways, just as the lack of such CHARACTER has caused a serious decline in the standards of behavior as represented by the declining standards of conduct, discussed earlier, that have become so popular and adopted nearly world-wide today.

This popular culture which continues to spiral downward is NOT simply a matter that should be left to the personal choices, preferences, and whims of the individual as has been the case in the past six decades. Such a notion, as discussed earlier, has given way to a decline in values that pervades society on a grand scale - - values that continue to decline even more with the passage of time.

Those in society with true CHARACTER, who rejected the value-starved, pointless way of conducting one’s life, cannot simply sit comfortably in the background. They must now step up and reverse the downward spiral that eventually could even lead to a society in which anarchy rather than order reins.

Allowing the valueless personal choices, preferences, and whims of individuals and groups shape the culture of society at large, as has been the case in more recent decades - - personal choices, preferences, and whims that eat away and ultimately destroy the very foundations of a society - - should be a matter of deep concern to all. But also, and more important, a matter that requires immediate action NOW for the destructive trend to be reversed!

It is the POSITIVE QUALITIES IN INDIVIDUALS - - the very HONORABLE CHARACTER that they possess - - that should be the guidepost for reshaping the culture of society!

A "CALL TO ACTION" is what is necessary!

A "CALL TO ACTION" that is directed to the leaders, executives, and managers of today’s organizations and institutions who are in strategic positions, not only to influence a broad base of society, but also, in the process, to significantly improve the organizations and institutions that they lead and manage, WHICH BENEFITS ALL STAKEHOLDERS!

So that executives, leaders, and managers of today’s organizations and institutions do not dismiss outright the substance of what is being said here and, more importantly, how all of this applies to them and to the very institutions and organizations in which they devote their time and efforts to lead and manage, GCC provides the following amplification:

The most substantial and effective long-term opportunity for sustainable improvements in the performance and success of the organizations or institutions they lead - - regardless of the type - - does NOT only come from adopting the latest techniques that the management experts recommend or even that the executives themselves devise.

RATHER, It comes as the result of the introduction of REAL CHANGE!

This is NOT the type of change that is so familiar to executives and other leaders - - the type devised and offered, over the years, by the management advice industry or management gurus to improve the effectiveness of organizations and institutions.

    • improve themselves both as individuals and as members of society at large

    • develop a better knowledge and understanding of the importance and value of a stable marriage and family unit to both society at large and to its other institutions, and apply that knowledge gained to their own life

    • select a career path that has relevance, and provides the opportunity of making a positive difference for themselves, their families and society at large

    • apply the time-honored values in whatever work environment they select - - values in individuals that reflect principled individual behavior and professional conduct.
